What type of flag is best for you?

Here at Ontario Flag and Pole, we are often asked if there is a warranty on our flags. The short answer is no. The reason for this is because there is no way to predict how long a flag will last due to weather, height of flagpole, size of flag, fabric of flag etc. That being said, different flags offer different value and potential longevity. We’re going to break down what type of flag is best for you in today’s blog.

What size flag do I need?

First off, it’s important to know what size flag you need based on the height of your flagpole.

The recommended etiquette guideline is that you want the length of your flag to be 1/4 the height of the pole. For example, if you have a 15-18’ pole, you would want a 27”x54” flag. For a 20-25’ pole, the ideal is to have a flag that’s 36”x72”.  If you don’t see the size of flag you’re looking for, give us a call and we can order for you.

What are my flag options?

Below are a few considerations when purchasing your flags. Important note: ALL Canadian flags are made in Canada!

1. Durapoly

Pros: Economical. Lightweight. Screen printed. Breathes. Flies well in all weather. Quiet.

Cons: See-through fabric. Shreds more quickly when the first tear happens.

2. Tackle II Nylon

Pros: Vibrant colour. Screen printed. Four rows of stitching on the fly end. Flies in light to strong winds. “Looks better longer” due to rip-stop fabric.

Cons: Louder flag noise in windy conditions (if that matters to you 😉).

3. Sewn/Appliqued

Pros: Brilliant colour and craftsmanship – three panels sewn and maple leaf sewn on each side of the flag. Four rows of stitching on the fly end.

Cons: Needs more wind to be able to flutter due to its weight. Pricier due to the increased labour in its construction.

As said earlier, there are no guarantees. We find one person will say they’re disappointed in the longevity of a flag, while another will say they’re pleased with the longevity of the very same flag. Of course, there are exceptions and we will always try to work with you to achieve customer satisfaction.
